Storing a motorcycle outdoors
Not every rider always has access to a garage or covered parking space. Fortunately, most motorcycles can be stored outdoors without issues, provided you take the right precautions. Rain, UV light, dirt and temperature swings can eventually affect paintwork, metal parts and electrics. With the right protection, your motorcycle stays in top condition and ready for the next ride.
In this article we outline what to watch for when storing a motorcycle outdoors, how harmful rain really is, and which practical steps give the best protection.

Leaving a motorcycle out in the rain
Most motorcycles can technically cope with a rain shower, but prolonged exposure to moisture is less harmless than many riders assume. Water, dirt and temperature changes can cause damage over time.
Corrosion and rust can form when metal parts such as bolts, the chain and brake discs are left exposed to moisture. Dirt and damp can also slowly dull paintwork and plastics, leading to faded spots or discolouration. There is also a risk of electrical issues if water gets into connectors or sensors.
A good motorcycle cover protects against rain, UV radiation and dirt and helps prevent these problems. A solid cover is waterproof, allows ventilation and is strong enough to withstand wind and other weather. That way the motorcycle stays well protected and you can always ride away on a dry bike.
Tips for storing a motorcycle outdoors
If a motorcycle has to stay outside for longer and you use a motorcycle cover, the tips below help keep it in good condition.
➡️ Clean and dry
Give the motorcycle a thorough wash before putting a cover over it. Remove insects, dirt and road salt and make sure everything is completely dry. Metal parts can be lightly greased for extra protection if needed.
➡️ Theft prevention
Security matters especially during longer storage. Always engage the steering lock and preferably use an approved chain lock, securing the motorcycle to a fixed object where possible. Use the lock openings in the motorcycle cover so the cover itself cannot be stolen either.
➡️ Ground surface
Park the motorcycle on a firm, dry surface where water can drain away quickly. This reduces the chance of it tipping over in strong wind and stops water from pooling under the bike and cover for long periods.
➡️ Battery
For longer periods of inactivity it is wise to connect a trickle charger to keep the battery healthy. If the motorcycle is stored outdoors in cold temperatures, it can even be better to remove the battery and charge it indoors with a trickle charger.
➡️ Check regularly
Inspect the motorcycle regularly. When a bike sits under a cover for months, unwanted situations can arise, for example pests looking for shelter. Occasional checks mean problems are spotted early and the motorcycle stays in good shape.
Storing a motorcycle outdoors for a longer period is usually not a problem. Rain, dirt and UV radiation can affect paintwork, mechanics and materials over time, but with a quality protective cover and the right approach your motorcycle can stay in excellent condition even when parked outside.
