Spring Motorcycle Check

Cold temperatures and long periods of inactivity can weaken the battery and affect electrical components. Before riding, take a few minutes to check the following:
✔️ Check the battery voltage using a multimeter. A healthy battery should read at least 12.4V. Recharge or replace it if necessary.
✔️ Start the bike and confirm that all warning lights operate correctly.
✔️ Test the headlights, indicators, brake lights, and dashboard illumination.
✔️ Make sure other electrical systems such as the horn, ignition, and heated grips (if fitted) are working properly.

Tires can lose pressure over time and may develop flat spots while standing still. Inspect them carefully before riding:
✔️ Adjust tire pressure to the manufacturer’s recommended settings.
✔️ Look for cracks, dry rot, bulges, or other signs of aging or damage.
✔️ Check tread depth. While the legal minimum is 1 mm, deeper tread provides better grip and safety.
✔️ Inspect the wheels for cracks, loose spokes, and leaks around tubeless valves or tires.

Fluids can deteriorate during storage, which may lead to poor performance or damage:
✔️ Check engine oil level and condition. Replace it if it appears dark or contaminated.
✔️ Inspect brake fluid. It should be clear and at the correct level; dark fluid may indicate moisture or wear.
✔️ Check coolant levels on liquid-cooled bikes and inspect for leaks.
✔️ If the bike has been standing for a long time, old fuel may cause problems. Draining and replacing it is recommended.
✔️ For chain-driven bikes, check chain lubrication and apply fresh lubricant if needed.

Moisture and inactivity can negatively affect braking performance and suspension components:
✔️ Inspect brake pads, discs, and calipers for corrosion or excessive wear.
✔️ Gently test the brakes. A spongy feel or unusual noises should be investigated before riding further.
✔️ Check the front forks and rear shock absorber for leaks or abnormal sagging.
✔️ During a short ride, listen for unusual sounds that could indicate loose or worn components.
✔️ Inspect and lubricate brake and clutch cables if required.

After storage, it’s important to ensure everything is secure and in good condition:
✔️ Check the paintwork and fairings for scratches, dirt, or loose panels.
✔️ Clean the motorcycle thoroughly using a soft sponge and a pH-neutral cleaner.
✔️ Inspect the seat, mirrors, and fenders, ensuring all parts are firmly mounted.
✔️ Check any luggage systems or panniers for wear and secure attachment.

Rubber components can dry out over winter, affecting performance and durability:
✔️ Inspect hoses, cables, and seals for cracks or stiffness.
✔️ Apply silicone spray to locks and rubber parts to keep them supple.
✔️ Make sure all covers and seals fit properly to prevent water and dirt ingress.

Once everything has been checked, take the bike for a careful test ride:
✔️ Start the engine calmly and allow it to warm up before riding off.
✔️ Listen for unusual engine or drivetrain noises.
✔️ Test handling and braking on a quiet, safe road.
✔️ Pay attention to warning lights, vibrations, or anything that feels out of the ordinary.
