Spring car check

Get your convertible, classic car, or sports car ready for the spring/summer season!

When the first rays of sunshine break through and temperatures slowly start to rise, many owners of convertibles, classic cars, and sports cars feel that familiar itch: it’s time to take the car out of storage and enjoy open-top drives and winding roads! But after months of standing still, it’s wise for most vehicles to undergo a thorough check before you can hit the road carefree. In this checklist, we’ll walk you through the most important inspections and maintenance tasks step by step—so you can be sure your car is ready for a season full of driving pleasure.

1. Battery and electrical systems

After a long period of inactivity, the battery may have lost charge or even become completely discharged. We therefore recommend checking the following:

👉 Check whether the battery is still properly charged. This can be measured with a multimeter. A healthy battery should read at least 12.4V.
👉 Start the car and see if any warning lights remain on.
👉 Check the lights, indicators, and other electronic components such as the windshield wipers, electric windows, seat heating, etc.
👉 If necessary, recharge or replace the battery.

2. Tires

Tires very slowly lose air, especially during long periods of inactivity. In addition, standing still in the same position for a long time can cause flat spots.

👉 Check the tire pressure and adjust it to the recommended level.
👉 Inspect the tires for cracks, dry rot, or other damage.
👉 Pay attention to the tread depth; at least 1.6 mm is legally required, but more is recommended for good grip.
👉 Don’t forget to check the spare tire, if present.

3. Fluids and leaks

During long periods of inactivity, oil and other fluids can degrade or evaporate. Therefore, check the following:

👉 Engine oil: pull out the dipstick and check the oil level and color. Change it if necessary.
👉 Brake fluid: make sure it is at the correct level and clear in color. Dark fluid may indicate contamination.
👉 Coolant: top up if the level is low and watch for any leaks.
👉 Windshield washer fluid: always useful to check and refill.
👉 Fuel: if your car has been sitting for a very long time with old fuel, consider refreshing or replacing it.

4. Brakes and suspension

During long periods of inactivity, the brakes and suspension can deteriorate, especially if the car has been stored in a damp place.

👉 Check the brake discs for rust. A light layer of rust usually disappears after braking firmly a few times.
👉 Test the brakes carefully: do they feel “spongy” or does the braking system make unusual noises? If so, have them inspected.
👉 Check the shock absorbers and springs for leaks or sagging.
👉 Listen for unusual noises while driving that may indicate wear, such as knocking or squeaking.

5. Paintwork, body, and soft top (if applicable)

After winter storage, you’ll of course want your car to look like new again!

👉 Inspect the paint for dust, dirt, and any damage, and repair where possible.
👉 Clean the car thoroughly, preferably using a soft sponge and a pH-neutral car shampoo.
👉 Check the soft top of your convertible for tears, wear, and proper opening and closing.
👉 Treat the convertible roof with a water-repellent coating/impregnation for extra protection against the elements.

6. Rubber seals and weatherstripping

Rubber seals can dry out or harden after months of inactivity.

👉 Check the rubber seals around the doors, windows, and trunk for cracks.
👉 Treat the seals with silicone spray or rubber conditioner to prevent drying out.
👉 Make sure the doors and windows close properly to avoid drafts and leaks.

7. Filters

Long periods of inactivity can lead to a buildup of dirt and moisture in your car’s various filters.

👉 Check the air filter and replace it if it is clogged.
👉 Check the cabin filter, especially if you are sensitive to pollen and dust.
👉 Fuel filters can become clogged by old fuel; replace if necessary.

8. Short test drive

Checked everything? Then it’s time to get your car moving again.

👉 Start the car and let it idle for a few minutes before driving.
👉 Listen carefully to the engine: unusual noises may indicate a problem.
👉 Check the driving behavior: does the car feel stable and do the brakes respond well?
👉 Take a gentle test drive and watch for any warning lights.

Conclusion: Ready to drive? Enjoy!

With this checklist, you can be sure that your convertible, classic car, or sports car is ready for the new season. By carefully inspecting and maintaining your car, you can enjoy every drive without worries. So get out there, find the most beautiful roads, and experience the ultimate driving pleasure — with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face!
